You can make a difference in your community by volunteering with Friendship House! We believe in the power of people coming together to create positive change in our community.
We value each of our volunteers and want to make sure they are placed in the best positions for their skills and talents. If you'd like to volunteer at Friendship House, simply follow these instructions:
1. Familiarize yourself with our current opportunities (at right)
2. Complete the volunteer application form (see below)
3. Set up a tour and information interview with the volunteer coordinator
4. Schedule a volunteer time
Please note: All volunteers must consent to a background check. Any volunteer younger than 18 must fill out a parental consent form and be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times while at Friendship House.

Gardener: The gardener will shepherd the kitchen garden at the Friendship House Café and will be responsible for planting, weeding, watering, pruning, and harvesting. Vegetable gardening experience preferred. Hours are flexible and will vary from week to week depending on the season.
Kitchen Server: Kitchen Servers assist in serving lunch at the Friendship House Café. We can use servers primarily on Saturdays, 11:30-12:30.
Hospitality Volunteer: Volunteers support Friendship House primarily behind the scenes wherever help is needed. This can involve, but is not limited to, helping with community sharing once a month, organizing the storage room and keeping inventory, picking up and dropping off donations and helping with various projects and events, including the Friendship House Christmas celebration. This position is generally for people with flexible schedules who are self-motivated, can work with minimal supervision and are highly reliable.
Landscape Volunteer: Volunteers will help with yard work and simple maintenance at each of our locations. Jobs will be completed with minimal staff supervision and may include gardening, weeding, lawn mowing, pruning, cleaning gutters, painting, staining and other duties as assigned.
Spanish Language Translator: Occasionally, we serve clients who speak little-to-no English. The Spanish Language Translator will be on call to translate for resident intakes and other meetings with the House Manager.
Event Support: Volunteers will assist at our annual fundraiser, En Vogue. Positions include ticket takers, greeters and backstage runners to ensure this fabulous event is a success. 2018 Event is March 8th
Saturday Market Volunteer- Friendship House
May 20th- October 7th | Every other Saturday | 8:45am- 2:15pm | Mount Vernon Farmer's Market- River Walk Park Plaza in downtown Mount Vernon
Friendship House will be at the Mount Vernon Farmer's Market every other Saturday selling its own fresh roasted coffee. Volunteers are needed to set up the Friendship House booth, sell coffee, inform people of Friendship House resources, and take down the booth. This position may also be done in shifts. All proceeds will go to feeding, housing, and clothing the homeless.
Inventory Volunteer- Friendship House
Ongoing | once a week for 4 hours during business hours | Men's Emergency Shelter at 1008 S. 3rd St., Mount Vernon
The Inventory Volunteer supports Friendship House by tracking donations so that the house is prepared to supply residents and community members with necessary items (clothes, toiletries, etc.). Tasks will include but are not limited to developing an efficient inventory system, tracking donation intake, tracking current donation room items, and developing a needs list (allowing Friendship House to notify the public of items needed for the homeless).
