Capital support lets us focus on what matters most

Women's Shelter Open House
Valentine's day, February 14th, 2023

It has been a lot of work to get to this point.  The lower level living dormitory area of the Women and Children's shelter had been under construction since early 2022.  To satisfy the sewer issue discovered, the residents had to vacate the lower living level to make way for concrete upheaval and a full rebuild of the sewer lines.

We learned the overall function of the system was compromised by the original layout of the lines and to get the proper fall and flow in the lines for the system to optimally work for our residents, we had to relocate the bathroom entirely to the other side of the space.

On our list of thanks, we must respectfully show gratitude to Skagit County in selecting this facility project for an allocation of REET funding.  This grant has enabled us to move forward with materials procurement with a peace of mind, knowing we are supported by the community and its governance.  Thank you Skagit County.   An additional grant award by Tulalip Tribes provides the additional funding assistance that will help get us across the finish line.

With that funding, comes labor for the materials to be installed properly and to code.  Many volunteer groups have come together to fulfill the work needed on this community effort to make the space ready to occupy once more.  We are ever grateful to the LiUNA Local 292 (Laborers International Union of North America) for the advance actions of demolition required for this project to move along.  Learn more about their hands of action for our cause below, in the Shed Build story.

The Northwest Carpenter's Union was very helpful in guiding this process, at its inception.

The floorplans required for the City planning departments review in consideration of our permit request were drafted with the final specs on paper for this large project by Stephanie Crane, of Mount Vernon.

Andrew Vander Stoep has connected us to so many of the key players in our volunteer groups to make this progress, on budget; including Full Speed Plumbing, the major plumbing provider for this install and the Local IBEW 191 team who came in as a group to run through a lot of needed electrical work to clean things up, reroute wiring, and led us to pass our L&I inspection.  Andrew, you truly have earned our MVV award of the year!  Most valuable volunteer~

Also special thanks to Dave Berentson, Berentson Plumbing for the fixtures being installed in the new bathroom along with so many other calls for support and guidance as we planned.

Finally, a Huge shout out and thanks to our very own Over-the Hill construction volunteer crew!  Your tireless service and steady focus on the areas needing attention and skill has kept us on schedule this entire process, as we aim for a New Year occupancy.  We would not be at this point without your care and consistent contribution of your time and labor.
We are very excited to be moving along quickly now as we prepare for new resident use of this space.  We hope to be able to invite you to join us in celebrating its completion around Valentine's day as we love to share successes with you!

Stay tuned for ribbon cutting info as we enter the New Year.

Barbara's House, long awaited facelift, a 2022 Victory!

Barbara's House received all new exterior paint with long needed repairs to the siding and porch.  This will be a benefit to all of Snoqualmie Street.
Major capital improvements have transformed the environment of our long term, low income housing facility, Barbara's House.

We have tremendous thanks for the City of Mount Vernon, our Mayor and City Council, for assisting us in attaining project funding through the Federal Community Development Block Grant to initiate and carry out these long needed capital repairs.

Storage Shed build completed in 2022!

A major volunteer build project, at the women's shelter was our new overflow shed build which is finally complete.  With help of the LiUNA Local 292 , they pulled the 2 leaking portable sheds out and we have put up a new, fresh, sturdy overflow shed for sorting and holding of the generous clothing donations that filter through the houses and giving room.

This shed build was a group effort for funding by several community partners through grants to procure the needed materials. We have teamed with an incredible group of volunteers for this build from our Local Northwest Carpenter's Union and Sisters in the Brotherhood (Sister's for the Sisters) Northwest Carpenter's Sisters who have taken many hours out to construct this new shed for us that will last the ever flowing daily gifts and donations from our community members.
Additional volunteers have joined our regular construction needs volunteer crew...we are naming this team our Over-the-Hill construction volunteer team and we are so grateful to have them onsite for a variety of needs across our facilities to enable strong programs to run effectively!

Women's shelter gets a new roof!     The beginning of our Capital projects of 2022

Over the years the tendency has been, reserve spending, be cautious in budgeting and be resourceful to meet the needs every step of the way.

Obviously, as a nonprofit, the goal is to conserve and stretch every dollar donated to ensure people are fed with their immediate needs met in daily services and shelter provisions.

So accordingly, one roof layer was added atop another, and another.  Finally, we let the structure breathe.  The three composition layers have been removed, revealing other needs which are timely in being able to access and correct for the greatest health and wellness of the residents and structure itself.

This property has seen many people in and through its doors, its held the dreams of so many beautiful souls who aim for a brighter future through accomplishments within our shelter support services.  This May, the Women and Children's shelter got a fresh deck of sheathing, all new soffit lumbers and flashing that will keep it water tight for years of shelter service to come.

Finally, properly vented, we look forward to many more opportunities to serve the women and children who come through our doors.  This project was completed Spring of 2022 and the cost was about $40,000.00 of our general fund.  Your donations make the difference!
Thanks to GAF for the shingles and MVBC for the plywoods rate you provided for this very big job!
