Skagit County is need of affordable housing. Our Homeless population continues to grow and the affordable housing availability is shrinking. We find that residents who are ready to leave our shelters have nowhere to go except back to homelessness. This is especially true for individuals on a fixed income, either SSI (disability insurance) or Social Security. There are long waiting lists for affordable housing and Barbara’s House is a step toward a solution.
Friendship House recently purchased a home located close to our Women and Children's shelter and just across the street from our Café. This home is dedicated as Barbara’s House and once renovated, will feature five bedrooms that can house five individuals on fixed incomes. We plan on two bedrooms on ground level, one of which will be ADA accessible and three rooms upstairs for folks with good mobility.
